Guess the Word

One game, four ways to play it. The player in turn holds the phone and the group feeds them clues until the timer runs out. Hits and skips are counted for you.

How to play

  1. Pick a variant and packs

Forehead, Mime, Describe or Fishbowl, plus your word packs and a round length of 60, 90 or 120 seconds.

  2. The phone goes to the player in turn

In Forehead they hold it against their head and only everyone else sees the word. In Mime and Describe it is the other way round.

  3. The group gives clues

Describe it, act it out, or say a single word, depending on the variant. The word itself or any part of it is off limits.

  4. Hit or skip

Tilt the phone down for a hit, up to skip. Tapping always works too: left half skips, right half scores.

  5. Recap, then next player

When the time is up you see the hits and the skipped words. The phone moves on and the score carries across the round.

Variants

  • Forehead

    free

Phone on the forehead, the group describes. Tilt down for a hit, up to skip. This screen turns landscape.

  • Mime

    free

The player sees the word and acts it out without a sound. Everyone else shouts guesses.

  • Describe

    free

The player describes the word but can’t say any part of it.

  • Fishbowl

    Plus

The same set of about twenty words three times over: describe, then one word only, then mime. The set is only reshuffled.

Plus is an optional subscription. You always see the price per period up front, and you can cancel in your Apple ID settings.

Who it suits

  • When the group needs to get up and perform instead of just sitting.
  • It works with two people, and the more voices shout clues the better.
  • For a short round that fits between dinner courses.

Questions people ask

Do I have to wave the phone around?

No. The game only reads a calm tilt down and up, never a throw or a swing. Hold it firmly and don’t play at the top of the stairs.

What if tilting doesn’t work?

Tapping always works: the left half of the screen skips, the right half scores. With VoiceOver on you get two buttons instead of the tilt.

Why does the screen rotate?

Only in the Forehead variant, so the word is readable from across the table. The rest of the app stays portrait.

Can every word be acted out?

Words that can’t be shown or described are left out of this game. The packs only serve up the ones that work.
